Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer’s Earlier Epic RPG Launches on Modern Consoles

At this year’s Game Awards, Larian took center stage as the powerhouse indie studio behind 2023’s standout title, Baldur’s Gate 3. They showcased a quirky statue in the desert and unveiled a surprisingly unsettling trailer for their upcoming RPG, Divinity. The excitement for a return to Rivellon is palpable, but with a long wait ahead, it’s fantastic to see that Divinity: Original Sin II has officially been updated for Switch 2.

The 2017 launch of DOS2 marked Larian’s rise as a top-tier RPG developer. The Divinity series kicked off with the decent action-RPG Divine Divinity in 2002, followed by the lackluster Beyond Divinity in 2004, which faced criticism for its weak narrative and lack of creativity. While Divinity II struggled with bugs and a poor Xbox 360 version in 2009, it found redemption a year later with a re-release that won over players. After a quiet period, Larian made a surprising yet successful move by releasing a real-time strategy game in the same universe in 2013. However, it was 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin that truly captivated audiences with its epic, old-school, party-based RPG experience.

Though its story was still a weak point, it was a significant leap forward for Larian. Three years later, everything came together in a spectacular way with Divinity: Original Sin II, which is now regarded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

Funded through Kickstarter and entering Early Access in September 2016, the game benefited from a year of development in close collaboration with its community, which proved to be a game-changer for Larian. This was followed by a robust Definitive Edition that enhanced and expanded the experience a year later.

The game’s quality allowed countless players to feel a sense of pride when Baldur’s Gate 3 made its mainstream debut in 2023, especially those who had been on board since its Early Access phase. With the announcement of Larian’s next project, Divinity, many will likely want to revisit the earlier titles.

If you’re among those looking to catch up, there’s no need to stress about anything before DOS. You can grab it on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. But honestly, I’d recommend jumping straight into the sequel. It stands alone as a superior experience—one of the best out there! Plus, it’s now been polished for modern consoles, including the Switch 2.

I’m genuinely excited for the chance to replay it. I plan to pick it up for Switch 2 and make sure to grab the trait for speaking to animals right from the start. Trust me, if you skip that, you’ll miss out on so much!
