Baldur’s Gate 3 Developers Not Connected to HBO Series
In the latest buzz from the gaming world, it’s been announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to receive a live-action adaptation on HBO, helmed by Craig Mazin, known for his work on The Last of Us and Chernobyl. However, a significant detail has emerged: none of the original developers from Larian Studios, including the game’s writers, will be involved in this project, even though it aims to continue the story from the game.
Reactions across social media are varied, but it seems Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, is not thrilled about the upcoming adaptation. He expressed his concerns in a post on X, stating, “I’ve spent the last 8 to 10 years of my life with the writers & creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 and they’re the most incredible storytellers & creators in the space. Only hope is that they get both the credit deserved & the characters are represented at the same level as the game.” His profile now humorously notes, “the Chernobyl show was pretty good.”
After Geoff Keighley revealed that Larian would not be part of the series’ development, Douse added an intriguing comment: “Except that we made it popular enough for it to be referred to as Baldur’s Gate 3.”
While Larian’s CEO and director, Swen Vincke, took a more hopeful stance online—sharing that Mazin had reached out to discuss the project—many fans remain skeptical. Some doubt that this outreach will lead to any meaningful involvement from Larian in the final product. Others are still feeling the sting from the last season of The Last of Us, which took creative liberties with the source material that didn’t resonate well, despite game creator Neil Druckmann’s involvement for two seasons before stepping back.
With no direct input from Larian alongside Mazin, concerns are growing about the future of Baldur’s Gate 3’s story and how it will be represented without the original creators on board.
