Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Celebrates the “Unsung Heroes” Behind Game Development: “Their Passion for the Team is Unmatched”

Creating games on the scale of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the latest Divinity involves a vast team effort, extending far beyond just the developers. Larian Studios’ founder, Swen Vincke, recently emphasized the crucial role of various support staff who help ensure the success of his team.

“Every three months, we come together to assess the game’s progress. It takes us four long days just to review the features and their statuses, and that doesn’t even touch on the content,” he explains.

“What struck me most this time was the extensive support structure we’ve had to establish to make all of this possible, and how vital the people managing it are,” he continues. “It’s heartwarming to see the dedication they put in, knowing that their efforts will eventually make a difference. They care deeply for the team and go the extra mile to support them.”

Vincke highlights the “unsung heroes”—staff members whose roles may not be directly linked to the new Divinity or other projects but are essential for keeping operations running smoothly. He points to office managers and legal advisors who tackle issues outside regular hours, often overlooked because their work isn’t as visible or creative, and they aren’t the ones representing the studio at major events.

Their contributions allow developers to focus on their craft without the burden of administrative tasks. Imagine trying to create Divinity: Original Sin 2 while also managing team expenses, payroll, vacation allowances, and the endless paperwork necessary to maintain a top-tier business.

These support roles are invaluable, and it’s refreshing to see Vincke acknowledge their importance in the game development process. “There’s a reason developers include all of their operations staff in the credits, and this is it,” he concludes. Here here.
