Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets the Green Light for a Sequel Series
Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out as one of the most iconic Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games ever, thanks to its unforgettable characters, intricate storytelling, and extensive player choices, all bolstered by the dedicated support from Larian Studios. Although Larian isn’t currently developing the next installment in the Baldur’s Gate series, as they shift their focus to a new project, the narrative of Baldur’s Gate 3 will expand into other formats.
Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us, has teamed up with Hasbro Entertainment to bring a television adaptation of Baldur’s Gate 3 to HBO. The series, simply titled Baldur’s Gate, will continue the story right where the game left off, with Mazin serving as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The show is set to introduce both new characters and some familiar faces, though specific details about the cast and character appearances have yet to be revealed. With no official plans for Baldur’s Gate 4, Mazin is likely to have considerable creative freedom, but Chris Perkins, former head of creative for D&D, will act as a consultant to ensure the series remains faithful to its D&D origins.
Mazin, a passionate fan of the game who has invested nearly 1,000 hours in the world of Baldur’s Gate 3, expressed his excitement about the project. “It is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” he stated. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his talented team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama programming, shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting, “His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.”
Gabriel Marano from Hasbro added, “The fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and we could not ask for better partners than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin to build this world with.”
Before his work on The Last of Us, Mazin co-wrote the films Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, and The Hangover Part 3, but he is best known for creating the Emmy-winning miniseries Chernobyl. After Chernobyl, he collaborated with Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us game, to adapt the popular PlayStation title for television. While the first season closely followed the game, the second season took some creative liberties, which received mixed reactions from fans. Following the second season, Druckmann departed the project, and comments from HBO’s chief content officer suggest the series may conclude after a third season.
With Baldur’s Gate, Mazin has more creative leeway, but he will need to navigate the challenge of canonizing one of the multiple endings from Baldur’s Gate 3, which is sure to spark debate among fans.
While the HBO series will pick up right after Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios has stated that it is not directly involved in the show’s development.
