Larian Studios’ hit title, Baldur’s Gate 3, was hinted at years before its official announcement in the developer’s previous game, Divinity Original Sin 2. However, the initial Easter egg was so overt that it had to be toned down, as revealed by the developers.
During a recent livestream, Larian CEO and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke discussed this tease after being prompted by communications developer Aoife Wilson, who mentioned a necromancer in Divinity Original Sin 2 that references “another world.”
Vincke recalled, “The preview of BG3 was originally very explicit,” but they had to dial it back. “We did it at the last minute because, in the summer when DOS2 launched, we wrote the first draft of BG3 due to our contract with Wizards of the Coast. It was pretty rough.”
As noted by Redditor truebmanicely, the D&D references go beyond a simple mention of a distant land. Divinity Original Sin 2 includes items like Mind Maggots—brain-altering tadpoles—and nods to the Grand Design and scheming octopuses, also known as mind flayers.
So, if you’re on the hunt for hints about Larian’s next Divinity game, it might be worth revisiting Baldur’s Gate 3. There could be clues about the studio’s future lurking in plain sight.
Baldur’s Gate 3 had such a diverse team involved that various influences are woven throughout, with one combat developer being a “big JRPG fan” while the CEO leans more towards “Ultima.”
