While Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3, isn’t directly involved with HBO’s newly announced streaming series that will act as a live-action sequel to the beloved D&D video game, they have secured a valuable consultant. Chris Perkins, a former game architect at Wizards of the Coast, will lend his expertise to the show.
According to reports, Perkins joins Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us TV series, who will serve as showrunner for the Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel. With such a strong team, fans can expect the series to stay true to the essence of D&D, particularly in how it interprets the game’s world and rules.
Perkins has nearly three decades of experience with D&D, starting in 1997 as the editor of Dungeon Magazine, a well-known publication for supplemental game content. By 2007, he transitioned to game designer and eventually rose to the role of “game architect,” overseeing the overall development of D&D.
The Baldur’s Gate series has its roots in the late ’90s but saw a remarkable resurgence with the 2023 release of Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios. The series is set in the Forgotten Realms, the primary D&D setting for many years, which encompasses a vast array of books, video game adaptations, and other media, including the underrated film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
No premiere date has been announced for the Baldur’s Gate 3 streaming series yet. In the meantime, check out our recommendations for the best shows currently available on HBO Max.
