Barbie 2 Must Meet 2026 Deadline to Move Forward

The franchise potential of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie could be in jeopardy if deals with the director and lead actors aren’t finalized by the end of 2026.

Recent reports highlight Warner Bros.’ challenges in getting a Barbie sequel off the ground. The original film was a massive success in 2023, but Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling have not committed to a sequel and have instead pursued other projects.

Negotiations with the trio have been ongoing for months, but there’s been internal debate at Warner Bros. about how to structure their offers. If agreements aren’t reached by December 2026, the film rights will revert to Mattel.

While Mattel Studios could produce a new Barbie movie after that point, it wouldn’t be able to connect to Warner Bros.’ popular adaptation. The studio is eager to avoid this scenario, especially after the underwhelming performance of Supergirl, and it seems they are still far from finalizing any deals.

Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs of Warner Bros. Pictures, stated that they have a rights deal with Mattel and have made significant offers to secure the next Barbie film. However, they have yet to reach an agreement, with a spokesperson attributing the slow progress to the representation of Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling.

Currently, the outlook for a potential Barbie 2 isn’t promising, but fans can look forward to other projects from Warner Bros. This October, Mattel Studios’ Matchbox The Movie will premiere on Apple TV+, followed by Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew on Netflix in February 2027, and Ryan Gosling’s take on Ghost Rider in 2028.

Matchbox The Movie recently unveiled its first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con.
