Batman: Arkham Studio Contributed to Lego Batman Development
All the trailers, previews, and interviews have positioned Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight as a sort of heir to the Batman: Arkham series. However, the game’s credits reveal that the connection runs deeper than mere inspiration from those open-world crime-fighting adventures. It turns out that Rocksteady Studios, the creators of the Arkham games, played a direct role in the development of this title.
Reports indicate that Rocksteady is credited as a co-developer on Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, with around 24 developers, including a producer and several designers, listed. Warner Bros. Games Montreal, known for Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, also contributed development support.
This collaboration isn’t surprising, given that TT Games, the studio behind Lego Batman, is part of Warner Bros. The trend of co-development among studios under the same publisher has become more common as the scale and budgets for major releases continue to grow. This partnership emphasizes that Lego Batman is not merely replicating the sandbox comic-book formula established by Rocksteady.
Beyond the shared development, Lego Batman features an expansive Gotham City where players can glide off skyscrapers and use a hookshot to traverse the skyline. The game’s combat system, driven by prompts, also echoes the mechanics found in the Arkham series. With Rocksteady having shifted focus back to the franchise after the mixed reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it seems we won’t see another Arkham-style game for a while, especially considering the lengthy development cycles for blockbuster titles these days.
