Batman: Knightfall Unveils First Trailer, Bringing DC’s Grimiest Tale to the Screen

One of the most impactful Batman narratives is making its way to animation. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the first trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 1 was unveiled, along with a screening of the initial film. Let’s dive into that trailer.

This first installment of a planned trilogy adapts the iconic 1990s comic storyline where Bane famously shatters Batman both physically and mentally. The trailer gives us our first look at Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Michael Mando as Bane. The official description teases, “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

As the trailer opens, a weary Batman states, “Gotham City needs Batman.” Robin points out that Batman hasn’t slept in two days since the explosion at Arkham Asylum unleashed a horde of villains onto Gotham’s streets. He suggests reaching out to “Jean-Paul” for assistance, referring to Jean-Paul Valley, a Bat Family ally who also takes on the role of the vigilante Azrael, featured in the trailer.

“We’re all that stands between those inmates and the fall of Gotham,” Batman replies to Robin.

The tension escalates as Batman removes his cowl in his mansion, only to be confronted by Bane lurking in the shadows.

“Let chaos reign in Gotham,” Bane ominously declares in voiceover.

Based on the expansive DC Comics crossover event crafted by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, Jo Duffy, Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent, Batman: Knightfall Part 1 adapts the saga’s opening act. The narrative follows Bane as he methodically wears down Batman by unleashing his entire rogues’ gallery before striking when the Dark Knight is at his most vulnerable. While elements of this legendary comic arc were incorporated into Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, this adaptation stays truer to the original storyline.

Jeff Wamester directs from a script by Jeremy Adams, with a voice cast that includes Pablo Schreiber as Jean-Paul Valley, aka Azrael, whose role grows more significant as the Knightfall saga progresses. Although a specific release date hasn’t been confirmed, Part 1 is anticipated to drop later this year.
