Battlefield 6 to Reintroduce Classic Large Map, But Not in Season 2
Battlefield 6’s long-awaited season two is set to drop in February, and we’ve got some exciting details about what players can expect. EA has also hinted at future content beyond this upcoming season in a recent update.
On January 21, EA and Battlefield Studios released a comprehensive update revealing key information about season two. The standout news is the confirmation of at least two new maps, with one of them named Contaminated. Players will get a chance to experience this map early through a new round of Battlefield Labs playtesting. EA is particularly interested in testing the map’s “unique gameplay mechanics” in live matches. In terms of size, Contaminated is said to fall between Eastwood and Mirak Valley, comparable to classic maps like Arras from Battlefield V.
While that sounds promising, EA seems to anticipate that some fans might want even more, which is likely why they teased the return of a beloved classic map in their recent announcement. Golmud Railway, originally from Battlefield 4, is set to make a comeback in a future season.
The developers explained, “Golmud Railway is being rebuilt for today’s Battlefield, not simply ported forward. Our goal is to preserve what made the map so memorable in Battlefield 4, particularly its combined arms gameplay, while enhancing its playability and integration with Battlefield 6 systems. Golmud Railway is planned to be the largest Battlefield 6 map to date, allowing for expanded gameplay on a grander scale.”
Since before the launch of Battlefield 6, players have been clamoring for larger maps, even creating their own using the game’s battle royale map and in-game tools. It’s exciting to hear that EA and Battlefield Studios are working on a map that will surpass the current ones in size. Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait too long to dive into it—perhaps in season three?
In the meantime, the developers confirmed that the Little Bird helicopter, a staple from previous Battlefield titles, will be introduced in season two. They also mentioned ongoing efforts to implement a solo queue for Redsec, the battle royale mode in BF6. While no release date has been provided, it seems the teams are still dedicated to this fan-requested feature.
Here’s the full update from the developers:
We’re also continuing internal and exploratory testing around Battle Royale Solo play, as we evaluate how different player configurations impact pacing, balance, and the overall Battle Royale experience.
This work is focused on understanding where Solo play can best fit within the broader Battle Royale roster, including how it affects match flow, survivability, and long-term engagement when featured alongside other Battle Royale experiences. These tests are part of our ongoing effort to make informed decisions about how Battle Royale is structured and presented over time, rather than committing to a single permanent configuration.
Battlefield 6’s second free season launches on all platforms on February 17, bringing new maps and, like the first season, likely introducing additional content such as new weapons, modes, cosmetics, and more.
