Beloved Call of Duty: Black Ops Titles Set for PlayStation Releases
If you’ve been browsing the Call of Duty subreddit or following discussions on social media, you’ve probably caught wind of the buzz surrounding new PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and its sequel, Black Ops 2. These classic PS3 titles are finally making their way to modern consoles, and Treyarch and Activision have officially confirmed the news along with a July release date.
On June 17, Treyarch announced on X that both 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2012’s Black Ops 2 are set to be “ported to PlayStation” in July. The porting duties are being handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio known for its work on various game ports over the years. In a follow-up post, Treyarch clarified that the new versions will feature multiplayer, zombies, and both campaigns.
While there was some speculation about these ports, dataminers had already uncovered evidence earlier this month. Additionally, there were rumors about potential remakes or remasters, but Treyarch’s announcement made it clear that these are straightforward ports. Expect them to run smoother and look better than their original Xbox 360 and PS3 versions from over 15 years ago, but don’t count on a plethora of new features or quality-of-life improvements.
A pressing question remains about the Xbox versions. Currently, you can play Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on Xbox Series X through backwards compatibility, which is a nice perk that PS4 and PS5 owners don’t have. However, these 360 versions are plagued by hacked players and don’t fully utilize the hardware’s capabilities. It would be great if Xbox, the parent company of Activision, also plans to port Black Ops and its sequel to Xbox One and/or Xbox Series X/S in July.
As for pricing, it’s still a mystery. Ideally, I hope they come in at no more than $25 each. However, considering that the original Black Ops on Xbox 360 is priced at $40 digitally in 2026, I’m bracing for these ports to be on the pricier side. Get ready for the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on PlayStation this July.
