Ben Affleck’s latest Netflix thriller takes the world by storm.

In today’s streaming landscape, a quirky yet entertaining film featuring a big-name star can suddenly take over viewing habits worldwide with minimal promotion. Recently, we saw this phenomenon with The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro. Now, it’s Ben Affleck’s turn with Animals, a crime thriller set in Los Angeles that also stars Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, and Stephan Yeun.

According to streaming analytics, Animals has surged to the top of Netflix’s global charts, dominating in nearly all but 14 of the 93 countries tracked. Whether you’re in Qatar, Lithuania, or Trinidad and Tobago, chances are you were tuning in to Animals over the weekend. (However, viewers in Poland opted for Less of a Stranger, a biopic about local rock icon Jan Borysewicz, founder of Lady Pank.)

Is Animals the leading film across all streaming services? It’s tough to say definitively since streaming platforms typically don’t share comparable data. However, given Netflix’s extensive reach, it’s highly probable. The only contender that might come close is the current Disney Plus favorite, Toy Story 5.

Affleck is a well-known figure and a lasting star, so the global success of Animals— which he directed and co-wrote— isn’t entirely unexpected. What is surprising, though, is the harsh criticism the film has received, holding a mere 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience reception isn’t much better, with a Popcornometer rating of 41%.

Critics like Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri have labeled Animals a “catastrophe,” describing it as starting awkwardly, progressing chaotically, and concluding ludicrously. Yet, that didn’t deter a massive audience from hitting play. At least it’s a step up from Other Mommy.

The film had a modest but respectable opening, especially considering it was once shelved by Warner Bros.
