Despite the numerous enhancements since its 2018 launch, Fallout 76 still lacks cross-platform play. Bethesda acknowledges the player demand for this feature, but it won’t be arriving anytime soon due to technical challenges.
“We are looking into it and have plans to assess what that work will entail for us. It’s just not in our immediate plans. We know players want it,” explained Jon Rush, creative director on Fallout 76.
The challenge arises from the game’s initial development. Crossplay is ideally considered early in a project, either as part of the launch or in a planned update. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for Fallout 76.
“There are significant technical hurdles that should be addressed before release,” added Bill LaCoste, production director. “Going back to retrofit it when players are on different platforms, and managing entitlements, account purchases, and currency complicates things.”
LaCoste assures that Bethesda will “continue to investigate” the requirements and how the team can enable crossplay, but “not in the short term,” he concluded.
While this news may be disappointing, it does indicate that the developers are actively working towards making it happen. There are ambitious plans for the nuclear MMO this year, with intentions to add more depth to the overall experience. Following the Amazon TV show, Todd Howard hopes players will check out Fallout 76, which seems like a solid starting point as we await remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
Todd Howard mentions that Fallout season 2 features “the most badass Power Armor I think we’ve ever done,” making it “awesome” to have it in Fallout 76 as well.
