Developers at Bethesda Game Studios have been reflecting on the company’s peak moments following the monumental success of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Emil Pagliarulo, senior designer and writer, shared that by the time Fallout 4 was in development, the team had become incredibly cohesive due to the lessons learned during Skyrim’s creation.
He likened the experience to a championship team, saying, “I used the term that the studio is a starship full of Rikers. Everyone could captain this ship, that’s how good everyone is. We were really tight. We really communicated well. We moved fast on things. We had a good groove.”
Producer Angela Browder emphasized the evolution of the team, noting, “With every project, I can absolutely, with 100-percent certainty tell you that we, as a studio, got better. Our process – the process of making a game – got better with every single one.”
Browder acknowledged that despite Skyrim’s phenomenal sales and acclaim, the team didn’t rest on their achievements. Instead, they continued to focus on refining their development process for Fallout 4 and future projects.
Todd Howard prefers to “start over” with each Elder Scrolls installment, and as we near Skyrim’s 15th anniversary, it seems Bethesda didn’t need to reinvent the wheel too drastically.
