Today, it was revealed that Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, Oblivion Remastered, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are making their way to Switch 2, but only one will be available on a physical cartridge.
This announcement came during the latest Nintendo Direct, with the studio behind Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, MachineGames, and Bethesda confirming on social media that “the game is on Game Card”—a quirky way to announce its physical release. This title, along with the Order of Giants DLC, is set to launch on May 12 for Switch 2, available both physically and digitally.
However, the situation is less clear for the Switch 2 versions of Fallout 4 and Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda stated in a release that Oblivion Remastered will see a digital launch on Switch 2 “later this year,” with a “code-in-box” physical edition planned for a future date. So, no game-key card for that one.
As for Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, which includes six official DLCs and a wealth of player-created content, it will be available digitally on Switch 2 starting February 28, with a code-in-box version following on April 28.
It’s puzzling why Indiana Jones is the only title receiving a traditional physical release on Switch 2, while the code-in-box versions of Fallout 4 and Oblivion Remastered leave physical media fans feeling let down. At least with the game-key cards, you have a tangible cartridge to keep, trade, or resell. But with just a code to download, it feels like you might as well go fully digital, unless you’re just after a case for your digital code.
Bethesda fans were also left disappointed earlier this week when remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas didn’t make the cut in the announcements. However, there are reports suggesting that the Fallout 3 remaster is still actively in development.
Keep an eye out for more upcoming Switch 2 games!
