Bethesda Spent Months Getting Fallout 3’s Liberty Prime to Follow Orders Instead of Attacking NPCs
The formidable Liberty Prime makes its presence felt in both Fallout 3 and 4, unleashing mayhem as only a colossal robot can. In a fun twist, it turns out that the developers at Bethesda faced just as many challenges managing this four-limbed behemoth as players do in the post-apocalyptic worlds.
“We spent months trying to get him to walk this very specific path. Months…” recalls Angela Browder, associate producer on Fallout 3 and now studio director at Bethesda. “‘It’s all we’re asking you to do, sir.’ You can get Liberty Prime almost where you want him, and then some random NPC will dart in front of him, and suddenly he’s off shooting in another direction.”
When players first encounter this oversized T-800, it’s inactive, as the US military struggled to find a power source strong enough to activate it. The Brotherhood of Steel took it upon themselves to resolve this, believing that Liberty Prime could be the key to defeating the Enclave. While the massive machine does lend a hand, getting it to operate smoothly was a monumental challenge.
“I spent several months rewriting parts of the pathfinding system to accommodate him and all the chaos he caused,” shares Jean Simonet, an AI and system programmer on Fallout 3.
While Liberty Prime’s penchant for chaos is entertaining for much of the gameplay, a pivotal moment in Fallout 3 requires him to take center stage. With such an unpredictable ally on the move, the best strategy is to clear a path and minimize distractions.
Experiencing Liberty Prime as a spectator and then joining him in battle are standout moments in both Fallout 3 and 4. It’s the kind of exhilarating fantasy that draws players in: chaotic sci-fi action where you charge into combat alongside a giant metal companion.
It’s almost heartwarming, until you remember the stress involved in making it all work. But then again, that’s the price of war, isn’t it?
