Billie Piper discusses the surprising conclusion of Doctor Who and its unpredictable future.

Sci-fi has had its share of infamous TV moments that left fans scratching their heads. From the disappointing ending of *Life on Mars* to the bizarre *Star Wars Holiday Special*, and even the curious existence of *Night Man* back in 1997, the genre has seen it all. Now, *Doctor Who*’s 2025 finale has sadly joined that list of head-scratchers.

On May 31, 2025, around 3.4 million fans tuned in to witness the *Doctor Who* finale, “The Reality War.” After the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) regenerated into Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), the burning question became, “Is Billie Piper the next Doctor?” Piper’s response, however, is anything but straightforward.

At the *For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi* convention in London, Piper stated, “I am not the next Doctor. I am Rose Tyler in hiatus.”

She expressed regret for her vague response but clarified that since she isn’t currently filming *Doctor Who* as the Doctor, she can’t “lie and say otherwise.”

Piper acknowledged that she’s been having a “rough time of it” recently but encouraged fans to remain patient about the show’s future. “It will be worth it when it comes. *Doctor Who* has been around for a very long time. It’s massively successful and has positively impacted many people’s lives.”

At present, there is no filming for *Doctor Who*, as the family-friendly space drama has been put out to competitive tender by the BBC. Both showrunner Russell T. Davies and production company Bad Wolf are stepping away from the project. Essentially, *Doctor Who* is on hold for the foreseeable future. While there has been considerable interest from potential competitors worldwide, it may take years before any solid news about the show’s revival emerges.

With the future of the series in limbo, Piper can’t confirm her role or when the show might return. Nevertheless, she has made it clear that, to her knowledge, Rose Tyler is not the next Doctor. How this will impact the future of *Doctor Who* remains uncertain—hopefully, fans won’t have to wait too long for answers.
