BioWare Co-Founder Explains the Challenges of AI in Game Development
When the news broke on October 21 that Electronic Arts would be closing the iconic RPG studio BioWare, co-founder Greg Zeschuk learned about it through a flurry of text messages. In a conversation, Zeschuk shared that his initial reaction to the closure was surprisingly subdued.
“I didn’t feel the immediate impact,” Zeschuk reflected from his home in Edmonton, where BioWare was based. “I wasn’t there to experience it firsthand, which allowed me to process it at my own pace.”
He emphasized that this didn’t diminish the sadness or significance of the studio’s closure, noting that Edmonton would feel the effects the most. However, Zeschuk mentioned that he and fellow co-founder Ray Muzyka had already said their emotional farewells when they departed the studio in 2012. His heart goes out more to those who are now facing job loss.
“Anyone entering the job market under these circumstances is facing a daunting and heartbreaking challenge,” Zeschuk remarked.
While Zeschuk’s response to BioWare’s closure was not overtly emotional, he expressed strong feelings about executives lacking game development experience and their excessive reliance on AI.
“There’s this strange notion that you can just recreate great games with random people and AI. It doesn’t work,” Zeschuk stated. “The harsh truth is that many of these companies are run by people who have never actually developed a game from start to finish, even a small one; they simply don’t understand the process.”
Zeschuk’s concerns are echoed in the industry. Epic Games, known for Fortnite, is fully committed to integrating AI into its projects. In a recent statement, Epic’s executive VP of development, Marcus Wassmer, outlined how the company is leveraging AI for Unreal Engine 6 and its gaming portfolio. Instead of nurturing traditional development skills, Epic reportedly encourages developers to utilize generative AI tools to enhance or expedite the development process. While generative AI may not have directly led to BioWare’s closure, Zeschuk’s worries about its growing role in game development are certainly valid.
This situation has historical precedents.
