Black Ops 3 Director Opens Up About the Elusive Easter Egg That’s Puzzled Players for Almost Ten Years

In a world where data mining is rampant, it’s surprising that an easter egg could be so intricate that it has remained hidden for over a decade. Yet, the “Impossible Easter Egg” in Black Ops 3’s Zombies mode has stumped players for ten long years, and its creator seems determined to keep it that way.

This elusive easter egg, dubbed the Impossible Easter Egg by fans, was hinted at by the game’s executive producer and director, Jason Blundell, during a pre-release interview. Blundell designed the easter egg to be intentionally complex and elaborate, expressing his frustration with how quickly players uncovered secrets in previous Black Ops titles.

Recently, Blundell spoke with content creator JCbackfire, and naturally, the topic of the Impossible Easter Egg came up. While he didn’t disclose how to activate it, he did drop some intriguing hints in a characteristically cryptic manner.

“I thought about two books that I’d read. The first book is by an author called Miyamoto Musashi, it’s called The Book of Five Rings,” Blundell shared. “The other book I was thinking about was called Here Be Dragons, which is a physics book about wormholes, advanced physics, and extraterrestrial life.”

“I’ve always kind of thought that the idea of ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if there were things there that we couldn’t see, that were always there?’” he continued. “So how do you create an impossible easter egg that could last forever? My goal was for it to never be found…so I worked pretty much through the night.”

Perhaps it’s just the influence of all the bizarre threads I’ve explored during my research, but I can’t shake the feeling that his specific book references might be hints rather than mere context. Or maybe Blundell is just trying to inspire the Call of Duty community to pick up some literature.

However, his final remark about the easter egg suggests he genuinely wants it to remain undiscovered. “The impossible easter egg—the clue is in the title. It is impossible. Stop looking for it. If you were to find it, it would mean something to you, but everything to me…because I want it to survive after all of us are gone.”
