Black Widow Players Brace for Impact as the Weakest Hero Faces Nerf

If you know any fans of Marvel Rivals who main Black Widow, it might be a good time to check in on them. These players, who stubbornly stick with a character notorious for having the lowest win rate in the game, have likely been facing a tough time in every match they join. To make things even worse, developer NetEase has decided to further weaken Black Widow.

The latest patch for Marvel Rivals dropped earlier this week, introducing a new character, Elsa Bloodstone, along with some Valentine’s-themed content for the team-based superhero shooter. While the update included some much-needed quality-of-life improvements, it also made adjustments to four heroes, and for some reason, Black Widow was one of them. It seems the sniper’s ultimate ability was unintentionally nerfing other characters too much.

“We called in the Black Widow Program for a reboot; now her stings strictly inflict the correct amount of Vulnerability,” NetEase stated in the patch notes.

Currently, Marvel Rivals features a roster of 46 characters, and Black Widow sits at the very bottom in terms of win rate. This has left her dedicated players hoping for a buff for quite some time. Their hopes were reignited after a notable incident involving several Twitch streamers.

In late January, one influencer was eliminated from a $40,000 Marvel Rivals tournament after being paired with a teammate who chose Black Widow. The influencer urged their partner to switch to a different character for a better shot at winning, as they were counting on the prize money to help with college tuition. The teammate’s refusal to cooperate and the resulting ban sparked a significant uproar in the community, spilling over into mainstream gaming discussions. A single YouTube video on the incident has garnered 4.3 million views, highlighting the widespread conversation around Black Widow.

While that drama involved specific individuals, the backlash affected all Black Widow mains. Soon after, players reported being ridiculed and bullied in nearly every match. Some claimed teammates would leave as soon as they saw a Black Widow player on their team. It was a wave of negativity, but many players tried to stay optimistic, hoping that all this attention would prompt NetEase to give Black Widow some much-needed love.

However, Black Widow’s struggles have only intensified with the latest update. If the community was already in a rough spot a month ago, this patch is pushing many to their breaking point. Players are questioning whether it’s time to give up on her altogether. The atmosphere is filled with frustration, with one player lamenting, “THERE’S NO WAY THEY NERFED WIDOW’S ULT!”

“Should they just remove Widow?” pondered one Black Widow main. “She’s not going to get any rework. Nobody’s going to play her. She’ll never be Meta. She’ll always be a throw character. People will always try to ban her if you pick her in comp,” the post continued.

While some are debating the future of this neglected hero, others see this as the final blow.

“The devs barely knew her, and the hitscan community never accepted her,” one fan reflected. “In a few years, there will be only a vague memory of a girl who once fought in the Red Room. And then that will fade away too. Goodbye, Black Widow, we hardly knew you.”
