Overwatch is back in the spotlight with its most significant update yet, which notably dropped the Overwatch 2 name to revive the original game and kick off a multi-season narrative arc. Blizzard Entertainment is celebrating the game’s comeback after Marvel Rivals overshadowed it for over a year. (Winston’s been missing his peanut butter for months!) This week, Overwatch introduced a groundbreaking five new heroes simultaneously, with five more on the way later this year. The excitement led to Overwatch more than doubling its previous peak on Steam, attracting over 160,000 players at once. Hero shooter fans are clearly all about Overwatch right now. So, when the Marvel Rivals Twitter account shared news about its Season 6.5 update, one fan humorously told them to hold off. “Girl not rn. It’s Overwatch week.” Blizzard’s social media responded with a video of tank hero Ramattra’s dance emote, reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar’s iconic crip walk, which he famously showcased during his own feud with Drake: “The mood all week.” The mood all week ???? Overwatch’s subtle brag comes after years of the hero shooter working its way out of a self-made pit. A canceled PvE mode and some controversial live service decisions left many former players disillusioned, and Marvel Rivals’ aggressive first year didn’t help. However, it seems that competition has only pushed both games to improve. On a personal note, the new heroes capture Overwatch’s classic blend of chaos and elegance beautifully. Their abilities are well-balanced and easy to grasp, yet they can create significant mayhem, like engaging in literal aerial catfights. To Blizzard’s credit, even when backlash arose against damage hero Anran’s redesigned appearance, the company quickly responded and promised another rework would arrive sometime in Season 1. “Stop banning the cat please”: Jetpack Cat has quickly become the most popular Overwatch hero, with players calling her the “most fun” – but she’s starting to face bans due to her overuse.
