Blizzard Defends In-Game Currency Sales, Sparking Outrage Among GDKP Raiders

Blizzard has put a stop to the gig economies on its Anniversary realms in World of Warcraft. The developer will continue to ban GDKP raids, where players bid gold on loot and share the earnings, along with other activities it considers “non-traditional.” This decision has sparked outrage among WoW Classic players. Have you seen how much a mount costs these days?

The forums are buzzing with frustration following a January 27 post where community manager Linxy clarified Blizzard’s position on “in-game advertising” and its efforts to align policies on non-traditional services, including “boosting,” across all WoW versions.

Linxy stated, “Organizations that provide boosting, matchmaking, escrow, or other non-traditional services, including those for gold, are prohibited.” Players attempting to circumvent these rules could face warnings, suspensions, or even permanent bans. However, players and guilds can still utilize “provided in-game tools (such as the Services chat channel) to buy or sell in-game services for in-game currency,” Linxy noted.

“That said, ‘boosting communities,’ particularly those operating across multiple realms, are not allowed,” the manager added.

This stance has left many WoW Classic players feeling frustrated.

“Nearly as out of touch with reality as is possible,” one commenter expressed.

“Not to mention the ban simply doesn’t work,” another chimed in. “These people are just delusional.”

“Give us back GDKP or people will quit!” warned another player, but Blizzard appears unmoved.

The developer is also not reconsidering its plans to eliminate combat and UI mods in World of Warcraft, stating, “Our goal was never to stamp out the addon ecosystem.”
