In a surprising move, Blizzard has decided to drop the number two from the Overwatch 2 title, rebranding the hero shooter simply as “Overwatch.”
Just four years ago, Blizzard reimagined Overwatch as Overwatch 2, a title that struggled to find its identity between a major update and a true sequel, as noted in our review.
The game never included the PvE mode that was supposed to justify the “2,” leading to a cycle of stagnation for the once-thriving FPS. However, during its Overwatch Spotlight stream on February 4, Blizzard announced plans to revitalize Overwatch, starting with the removal of the “2.”
In a press release, Blizzard stated, “Overwatch is more than just a digit: it’s a living universe that keeps growing, keeps surprising, and keeps bringing players together from around the world.”
“This year marks a significant turning point in how the development team envisions the future of Overwatch,” Blizzard added, “so we are officially dropping the ‘2’ and moving forward as ‘Overwatch.'”
Franchise general manager and live service lead Walter Kong elaborated, sharing with an outlet, “Internally, we’ve discussed a ‘return to form’ as a stretch goal we wanted to achieve.”
With the number two out of the picture, players can look forward to a new storyline, the introduction of 10 new heroes throughout 2026, and even a Hello Kitty collaboration starting February 10. (And yes, her name has never been “Hello Kitty 2.”)
