In a surprising turn of events, Diablo 2 has received its first new class and significant content update in 25 years with the unexpected release of the Reign of Warlock expansion. With this new content, Blizzard Entertainment is exploring the possibility of adding even more to the classic 1999 RPG. During this week’s Diablo Spotlight, Blizzard unveiled that the new Warlock class will be featured in Diablo 2, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo 4, all tied together by a shared narrative. The Warlock is already available in Diablo 2, while Diablo 4 will introduce it with an expansion in April, and Diablo Immortal will see the class added this summer. Lead designer Timothy Vasconcellos discussed the potential for more fresh content for the 26-year-old classic in an interview, emphasizing that the direction will depend on community feedback. “We’re eager to see how the community reacts to what we’re creating,” Vasconcellos stated. “If we’re entrusted with this legacy and the response is positive, indicating that we’ve successfully preserved the essence of the 1999 game, then we can consider future opportunities. But we need to get this right; otherwise, we risk damaging the game in our efforts to evolve it.” The future of Diablo 2’s Warlock as a “sign of something new” relies on the feedback from the millions of players still enjoying the game, according to lead producer Matthew Cederquist. He also noted that the team is being cautious to avoid “messing up the Mona Lisa,” which is why Diablo Resurrected remains unchanged for those who opt not to purchase the Reign of Warlock expansion. After all, it wouldn’t be a classic experience if it were completely overhauled. No Rest for the Wicked lead criticizes “irreparable damage” to Diablo under former Blizzard head Mike Ybarra, who remarked, “I don’t have to work anymore, but you do, so chill.”
