Blizzard Shifts Focus from Annual Diablo 4 Expansions to Seasonal Storylines Ahead of Diablo 5
Diablo 4 has seen two significant expansions since its 2023 launch, and it appears that’s all the game will receive. With the announcement of Diablo 5 set to arrive in spring 2029, Blizzard has confirmed that while seasonal narratives will continue in the current action-RPG, no further expansions are on the horizon.
“We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and gearing up for Diablo 5,” the game director stated in an interview at BlizzCon 2026. “We feel like we’ve wrapped up the Story of Hatred with the conclusion involving Mephisto, and we’re shifting our focus to the Story of Terror.”
Diablo 5 will thrust players into a post-apocalyptic Sanctuary, taking place a century after the events of Diablo 4. While additional story elements will emerge leading up to the sequel, the overarching narrative of the current game has concluded with the release of Lord of Hatred earlier this year.
“The events of Diablo 5 occur 100 years after everything in Diablo 4, which gives us plenty of space to explore where the story can go as we progress,” the director explained. “Continuity is something we’re really excited about, but we don’t have a definitive roadmap just yet; we want to gauge fan reactions season by season.”
It’s uncertain if this was the original plan, but many fans anticipated that Diablo 4 would continue to receive substantial content updates for years. In a live-service approach reminiscent of other titles, the former franchise head had hinted at ongoing annual expansions.
“When we launched the game and kicked off this first season, we viewed it as laying the groundwork for future developments,” he mentioned back in 2023. “As we plan our quarterly seasons and annual expansions, those are our main focus for the live service.”
While it seems Diablo 4 won’t be completely phased out when Diablo 5 launches—citing ongoing support for Diablo 2: Resurrected, which recently introduced a new Warlock class—it’s likely that Blizzard won’t run both games simultaneously with extensive seasonal content. In the meantime, players can look forward to the new Amazon class arriving in Diablo 4 in the first half of 2027.
