Blood of Dawnwalker Emerges as a Surprising GOTY Contender with a $40 Million Budget
The Blood of Dawnwalker has its share of shortcomings, but it excels in several key areas, making its achievements even more impressive given that it comes from a first-time studio operating on a budget of just $40 million.
This funding was provided by a major investor, which acquired a 26-percent stake in Rebel Wolves, the studio behind the game. Many of the cofounders hail from CD Projekt Red, including Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the director of The Witcher 3.
For a startup based in Poland, that’s a significant amount of funding, but costs can escalate quickly, especially with a team that has grown to 160 members. Tomaszkiewicz reportedly covered the first year of development in 2022, and the team successfully launched the game by 2026, largely because they adhered to their original vision of a day-night cycle that enhances vampire abilities, along with a time limit that prevents players from experiencing everything in one go.
Leveraging the established design principles from The Witcher 3 certainly played a role in their success. Rebel Wolves didn’t need to reinvent the wheel, and they still managed to achieve 1 million sales during the peak season.
“We committed to keeping the core elements of the game intact,” Tomaszkiewicz stated. “The foundations remain the same as they were in the initial pitch. We understood that altering those key aspects would affect the entire game.”
