In the recent reboot of the DC universe, several beloved characters faced the chopping block, leaving fans wishing some could have made the cut for whatever plans James Gunn has in store for DC Studios. While characters like Peacemaker emerged unscathed, one promising hero, Blue Beetle, portrayed by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña, found himself in a state of uncertainty. Released just as the comic book universe was undergoing a transformation, the film’s timing left Jaime Reyes’ future hanging in the balance.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope, as director Ángel Manuel Soto has shared insights about Blue Beetle’s potential role in the future of the DC Universe. While promoting his new film, The Wrecking Crew, featuring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, Soto hinted that discussions have taken place regarding Blue Beetle’s return.

“I don’t think that chapter has been closed,” Soto teased. “I’ve had friendly conversations with Peter Safran and John Rickard. And I know James is a huge fan of Blue Beetle, and he’s said multiple times that Blue Beetle is part of the DCU.”

Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe has expanded beyond the big screen. Before David Corenswet donned the cape as Superman and we enjoyed a second season of Peacemaker, the new DCU kicked off with animated adventures in Creature Commandos. Soto confirmed that this avenue has been explored for further stories featuring Blue Beetle and his family, who are well aware of his superhero life.

“I will say that I personally – I’m not saying that they’ve said it – I personally would love to continue Blue Beetle 2, Blue Beetle 3, work with Xolo and the whole Reyes family,” the director explained. “But we have had conversations about how we can expand the adventures of the Reyes family through animation. And if that’s something that finally happens, whether it happens or not, conversations have been had. It would be nice.”

As the DC Universe evolves, James Gunn has made it clear that any characters crossing over from animation to live action will be portrayed by the same actor in every version. This has already been seen with Frank Grillo as Rick Flagg Sr., who appeared in Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman. With this in mind, it would be fantastic to see Maridueña further develop his character in an animated format before bringing him back to live action later on.

“I think that you can do so much with animation, and it’s also a fun medium that I’ve always wanted to explore,” Soto added. “So if the movie gods and our friends at DC and Warner Bros. see it fit, I would love nothing more than to continue to tell that story.”

For now, we’ll have to wait and see if Reyes makes a comeback, but in the meantime, stay updated on all the other DC projects coming our way.
