Booster Gold series officially canceled, according to creator.
In 2023, the leadership duo of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios unveiled an ambitious plan to reboot the DC cinematic universe, introducing a fresh lineup of movies and TV shows under the banner of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. This new direction featured projects like Superman and the highly anticipated HBO series Lanterns, along with a TV series centered on Booster Gold, a time-traveling hero from a futuristic Gotham City.
However, it seems that the Booster Gold project is no longer in the works, as confirmed by the show’s writer, David Jenkins. On Friday, Jenkins shared the news on Meta’s Threads platform, stating, “My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward.” He had previously expressed his excitement about taking on the project in 2025, mentioning that he was “inherit[ing] this project from Danny McBride.” Jenkins is known for creating HBO’s Our Flag Means Death and TBS’s People of Earth.
Jenkins’ announcement appears to have been influenced by recent remarks from actor Mahershala Ali, who mentioned in a GQ interview that he had “moved on” from Marvel’s Blade movie, indicating that he wouldn’t be involved if the character were to make a return to the big screen.
“[Marvel] had me under contract, they have billions of dollars,” Ali stated. “If they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.”
At this point, it’s uncertain whether DC Studios will pursue a different version of Booster Gold without Jenkins at the helm.
Booster Gold, whose real name is Michael Jon Carter, first appeared in 1986’s Booster Gold #1. Created by writer-artist Dan Jurgens, Carter is a former football star from the 25th century who travels back to the present-day DC Universe with his robot sidekick, Skeets. Armed with knowledge of historical events and advanced technology, he seizes the opportunity to become a celebrity, adopting the superhero moniker Booster Gold—a name reportedly given to him by former President Ronald Reagan. Throughout his comic book history, Booster Gold has been a member of both the Justice League International and the Justice Society of America, often teaming up with fellow hero Blue Beetle.
This latest setback for the Booster Gold adaptation adds to the challenges facing Gunn and Safran’s DCU, which has undergone significant changes since its initial announcement. While DC Studios has already rolled out several projects, including Superman, Supergirl, and Creature Commandos, others like The Authority, Waller, and Paradise Lost seem to have been sidelined. Fans are still awaiting updates on projects like Swamp Thing and The Brave and the Bold.
In the meantime, DC enthusiasts can look forward to Lanterns in August, Clayface in October, and the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, set for July 2027. There’s even a show featuring Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd on the horizon.
As the DCU prepares to launch in theaters, there’s still a noticeable gap in the release schedule.
