Borderlands 4 Confirms Its Existence with a 2026 Release Date

Borderlands 4 made its debut last year, earning praise for its combat and expansive world, though many players, including myself, pointed out various technical glitches and performance hiccups. Since then, the developers have been actively rolling out updates, and they have an exciting roadmap lined up for 2026 that promises level cap increases, cross saves, and more.

On January 29, a significant update for Borderlands 4 was released across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This update introduces a long-awaited photo mode, allowing players to capture stunning cinematic shots of their characters in action, whether they’re blasting rippers or aliens with a four-barreled assault rifle. Alongside this feature, the update includes a comprehensive list of tweaks, changes, and fixes typical of a major update for a modern game in 2026. However, the real excitement lies in what’s on the horizon for Borderlands 4 in the coming months.

In a recent blog post, the developers shared their 2026 roadmap, highlighting both previously hinted features and new additions that are sure to please any Borderlands 4 fan. First off, they confirmed the return of Pearlescents, a rare loot tier from earlier titles, set to debut with the game’s first expansion, “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,” launching in March. Players won’t need to purchase the DLC to start finding these elusive loot pieces once they’re integrated into the game. This update will also introduce the first new Vault Hunter, C4SH.

Additionally, the developers are working on three highly requested features for Borderlands 4. While no specific release dates were provided, these features are expected to roll out in 2026.

Future updates will include level cap increases for all players, which the developers are excited about, as it will enhance build variety and interactions thanks to the extra skill points.

Cross-platform saves are also on the way, enabling players to switch between platforms without the hassle of starting a new character. This is particularly promising for those of us with high-level characters spread across different systems.

Moreover, shared world progression will be introduced, allowing players to share their open-world achievements—like extra backpack slots, discovered Vault Fragments, and vehicle unlocks—across all characters. I hope this feature remains optional, as I’d love the chance to start fresh with a new playthrough without carrying over previous upgrades.

On top of all this, the developers have committed to more free events. However, if they resemble last year’s not-so-great Halloween event, my enthusiasm is somewhat tempered. Coming in 2026, players can also look forward to new endgame content, including a new raid boss and a challenging Takedown mission set for Q2 2026. This content was initially slated for a Q4 release, so it’s great to see it moved up.

So, contrary to what some may claim online, Borderlands 4 is far from “dead.” The real question remains whether this new content and the free updates will arrive on schedule and meet expectations. For now, I’m off to snap a cool screenshot of my character launching a rocket at Claptrap using that new photo mode.
