Brandon Sanderson Hints at a Possible AAA Mistborn Game

Fans of Mistborn might eventually get to explore the streets of Luthadel in a video game, but it looks like that’s still a ways off. In his annual “State of the Sanderson” update, Brandon Sanderson revealed that he’s been in talks with several major developers about a potential Mistborn game. If it moves forward, it will take years to materialize. Sanderson is optimistic, stating, “I feel I’m finally getting established enough that we can make a Mistborn game happen. … This is at Step One only, but it’s an encouraging One.” While he didn’t disclose any specific names, he mentioned engaging with some big names in the industry, including those he admires. Sanderson is also working to retain his rights for video game adaptations of Mistborn, as these rights were previously tied up with film rights for about six to seven years, limiting his ability to explore the market until now. He encouraged any studio or developer interested in a Mistborn or Stormlight project to reach out to his representatives. Mistborn is part of Sanderson’s expansive Cosmere universe, which also includes the Stormlight Archive series. Recently, several tabletop games inspired by his works have been released, including Cosmere RPGs and a Mistborn deckbuilder. Sanderson has some background in video games, having designed the world and characters for the tactical game Moonbreaker. If this new project comes to fruition, it wouldn’t be Mistborn’s first venture into gaming; a title called “Mistborn: Birthright” was in development for a few years before it was canceled, and the character Kelsier even made a cameo in Fortnite, thanks to Sanderson’s ongoing collaboration with Epic.
