Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn film reaches a significant new milestone.
Brandon Sanderson stands out among fantasy authors for his commitment to keeping fans updated on his various writing endeavors. Following a major deal with Apple in January to adapt his expansive Cosmere universe, he has been openly sharing his progress on the screenplay for his first project, Mistborn. He successfully met his goal of completing a first draft by July, announcing on social media that he finished just in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the book.
Mistborn: The Final Empire launched Sanderson’s initial trilogy and marked the moment his vision for the Cosmere truly began to unfold. Set in a post-apocalyptic realm ruled by the immortal tyrant known as the Lord Ruler, the story follows a young thief named Vin who discovers her extraordinary magical abilities. She teams up with a group led by an escaped prisoner, aiming to topple the oppressive regime through a blend of theft and assassination.
As the series progresses, Sanderson unveils that the major issues plaguing Scadrial stem from godlike entities called Shards, which fuel magic across the Cosmere. The clash between these Shards lies at the core of Sanderson’s grand fantasy saga, The Stormlight Archive, which is set to be adapted into a TV series as part of the Apple deal, contingent on the success of Mistborn. Sanderson is keenly aware of this, striving to create a solid script akin to the approach of DC studios chief James Gunn, aiming to minimize the need for reshoots. He is also focused on ensuring that the film remains true to his original book, avoiding the addition of new scenes that might condense the plot.
The prolific writer has a wealth of other projects in the pipeline. He recently wrapped up the first book in a new Mistborn trilogy titled “Ghostbloods,” as well as Songrise, the second installment in his upcoming sci-fi trilogy co-written with Janci Patterson. His next entry in the Cosmere, The Fires of December, is set to release on December 8.
