Brands Set to Introduce Advertisements in ChatGPT

OpenAI has kicked off its advertising pilot in ChatGPT, giving us a glimpse into the types of products that might pop up during our chats with the AI. A variety of brands are set to showcase ads within ChatGPT, and these placements are expected to come at a significant cost. Notable names include major retailers and automakers.

Ads will only be visible to free users or those subscribed to the more affordable $8/month Go plan. OpenAI has assured users that these ads will be “clearly” labeled and will not affect the responses generated by ChatGPT. Here’s a rundown of the brands that have partnered with OpenAI so far.

**Target**
Target has announced that it will utilize ads in ChatGPT to help users “discover products, deals, and inspiration” tailored to their queries. The ads will be based on keywords from user prompts. For instance, if someone asks about “countertop cooking appliances that make everyday meals more convenient,” they might see an ad for a Target air fryer.

**Adobe**
Adobe plans to feature ads for its AI-driven document editor, Acrobat Studio, and its AI video and image generator, Adobe Firefly, within ChatGPT. The company views this partnership as a way to “better understand how ads can provide helpful, relevant experiences” while enhancing its platform for advertisers in AI search results.

**Williams-Sonoma**
Ads for Williams-Sonoma’s selection of housewares, kitchenware, and furniture are also on the horizon. The company aims to explore how ads in ChatGPT can help “surface relevant, high-quality products” during key decision-making moments.

**Audible**
ChatGPT’s advertising space won’t be limited to physical products, as Audible, owned by Amazon, is looking to collaborate with OpenAI to “reach new audiobook listeners.” It remains unclear whether Audible will promote its subscription service or specific audiobooks when users seek recommendations.

**Ford, Mazda, Mrs. Myers, and more**
The advertising agency WPP Media is teaming up with brands like Ford, Mazda, the cleaning brand Mrs. Myers, and the luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet to introduce ads in ChatGPT. WPP Media also represents Audible and Adobe. Additionally, other agencies such as Dentsu and Omnicom have announced plans to bring their clients’ ads to ChatGPT, although they haven’t specified which brands will be featured. Dentsu mentioned it has “several clients” participating in OpenAI’s test across various sectors, including grocery, hospitality, retail, software, travel, and consumer packaged goods. Omnicom has indicated that its clients span apparel, automotive, beauty, technology, telecommunications, hospitality, retail, and fast food.
