Bungie Acknowledges That Finding Time to Play Marathon’s New Endgame Raid Is the Biggest Challenge
One does not simply stroll into Cryo Archive. The endgame Marathon map demands serious gear prep, a solid understanding of mechanics before facing them, and a tightly coordinated team that communicates constantly. Even with all that, expect to fail more often than not. Bungie is aware of this; it seems to be part of the experience. However, they also recognize the desire for more casual players to dive into the intense exploration of the UESC colony ship.
Since launch, the development team has actively sought player feedback and identified key issues they’re considering addressing. Cryo Archive is no exception. While hardcore Marathon fans are impressed by the map’s scale and challenge, it’s clear that some rough edges need smoothing to make it more accessible.
Game director Joe Ziegler highlighted the main concerns the team is evaluating after the weekend. The three key areas of focus are options for solo players in Cryo Archive, reducing frustrating RNG for the Subroutines found in vaults, and offering more flexible scheduling for casual gamers.
Kudos to all the players who’ve been battling it out in the floating death fridge known as Cryo Archive! We’ve been closely monitoring your thoughts and feedback, compiling notes for future improvements. After this weekend, we’ll take some time to…
Cryo Archive is currently available only on weekends, starting Friday at 1:00 p.m. ET. This limited window means players have to set aside other responsibilities to team up for a few grueling runs. But the challenge doesn’t end there. Each attempt requires 5K worth of gear, and completing the map involves numerous successful runs to loot specific gear from designated vaults to unlock the final boss fight, all while avoiding elimination by other players.
In contrast to a typical Destiny 2 raid, where a team faces a straightforward series of puzzles and enemy encounters, Cryo Archive presents a more intricate and layered experience with starts, stops, and progress that can stall or loop back. This complexity makes it a remarkable and unique gaming challenge, yet it can be daunting for casual players who can’t commit to it extensively.
“It’s the most elaborate extraction shooter map I’ve ever seen in a game,” streamer Shroud remarked over the weekend. “The loop they created is truly something special. The question is, is it too elaborate, too complex, too much of a grind? Can your nine-to-five grandma and grandpa handle it?”
The answer? Maybe. I can envision a dedicated group of players making this their weekend goal throughout the game’s first season. However, it’s just as likely they could invest that time and still not succeed. That’s the dual-edged sword of the challenging nature embedded in Marathon’s endgame. It’s a tough issue to tackle, which is why I’m not surprised Ziegler mentioned the team will need some time to sort it out.
In the meantime, easing the Subroutine RNG and lowering the pack value required to run Cryo Archive seem like straightforward ways to reduce the grind without compromising the overall challenge. All I know for sure is that, as a nine-to-five grandpa myself, I’m feeling pretty worn out today.
