Bungie Moves On from Destiny Series

Bungie is wrapping up its journey with Destiny 2. The studio announced that the final major update for the game will drop on June 9th, marking a shift in focus towards new adventures for Bungie. After this last update, players can still dive into the game, similar to how the original Destiny remains accessible.

In this final update, Bungie aims to implement numerous changes to make Destiny 2 a welcoming environment for returning players. The announcement details a wealth of new content, with more specifics to be revealed leading up to and shortly after the launch. However, following this update, Bungie’s weekly blog posts will also go into a sort of hibernation, with the promise that players will be the first to hear any future news about Destiny.

Bungie first launched Destiny in 2014, following its success with Halo, and followed up with Destiny 2 in 2017. Despite stepping back from Destiny, the studio is not leaving the live-service arena. Earlier this year, they released the extraction shooter Marathon, which, while not as monumental as Destiny 2 during its peak, has garnered positive feedback. It seems that Bungie’s next project will venture into new territory outside the Destiny universe. The studio expressed excitement about exploring the unknown, stating, “The unknown can sometimes feel wild, even a bit scary at times, but these opportunities to explore the future are invigorating.” They reaffirmed their commitment to creating games that both they and players are eager to enjoy.

In 2022, Bungie was acquired by Sony for $3.6 billion, but the studio has faced challenges since then, including layoffs and a delay for Marathon. Sony brought Bungie on board during a significant push into live services, a strategy that has since been scaled back, reflecting the current tumultuous state of live-service games overall.
