Bungie Resolves Marathon Pre-Order Bug That Unintentionally Triggered Destiny 2 Install on Steam, Sparking Laughter Among Players
Pre-ordering Marathon comes with a bundle of digital goodies, but Destiny 2 isn’t supposed to be one of them. However, for a short time, if you pre-ordered Bungie’s latest extraction shooter, you might have found Destiny 2 unexpectedly downloading onto your hard drive.
This amusing glitch has since been fixed. The official Marathon account announced on Twitter, “We’ve resolved an issue where Destiny 2 would begin installing after pre-ordering Marathon on Steam.”
Since Destiny 2 is free-to-play, this was just a mix-up within Steam’s system, and no transactions were affected by the error. It would be interesting to know how this happened; perhaps it was a case of crossover rewards between the two games. To access those rewards, players need a Bungie account linked to Destiny 2.
The tweet also mentioned, “We have also resolved an issue where Collector’s Edition owners would receive an error when attempting to activate their game code on Steam.”
Honestly, if this glitch had happened to me, I might have just rolled with it. There are worse things to distract you. Fans are taking it in stride, with one person commenting, “Reads like something out of The Onion,” while another quipped, “Woah woah woah… That’s a feature. Give ’em Destiny 2.”
Another glitch affecting players looking for enhanced packages has also been addressed. The same tweet confirmed, “We have also resolved an issue where Collector’s Edition owners would receive an error when attempting to activate their game code on Steam.”
Now that everything seems to be sorted, players can gear up for Bungie’s first new game in nearly nine years and the first entry in the Marathon series in three decades. Unlike the RPG-lite elements of Destiny 2, Marathon focuses on loot collection and competitive gameplay.
Set in a distant future, teams of cybernetic runners compete for scarce resources in a vibrant wasteland. After spending over a decade in the Destiny universe, I’m eager to dive into a Bungie shooter that promises less lore and baggage, even if the company seems intent on reminding us of the Guardians.
