Bungie Revives Destiny and Plans Major Evolution for Marathon in Upcoming Studio Update
Months after wrapping up development on Destiny 2 and parting ways with much of the team behind the beloved shared-world shooter, Bungie is making a comeback to the franchise. In a recent studio update from Poria Torkan, the studio head, and Josh Deane, head of product and GM of Marathon, the duo revealed plans to “return Destiny to its original promise” with significant changes ahead.
This includes bringing back major content updates and setting the stage for “new Destiny stories and games.”
In a video message, Torkan and Deane discussed the future of Destiny, emphasizing that the franchise is integral to Bungie’s identity. “It’s the foundation upon which everything else rests, and we are absolutely not done with Destiny,” Torkan stated. “We have more stories to tell, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.”
Deane added, “We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to reignite that awe-inspiring mystery, the sense of discovery, and the community of Guardians uniting against impossible odds. But that has to start with restoring what’s rightfully yours. It’s going to take some time, but we’re committed to unvaulting the Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids that should never have been taken away.”
The specifics of these plans remain unclear, including whether Destiny 3 is back on the table or if Bungie is planning a significant overhaul of the 2017 title. Based on Torkan and Deane’s comments, it seems we might be waiting a while for concrete answers.
While Bungie focuses on Destiny, the studio also aims to evolve its extraction shooter, Marathon. Torkan and Deane shared their vision to “expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience, offering players more ways to navigate this perilous alien world.”
“Throughout the rest of Marathon’s first year, we will continue to enhance its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game,” Bungie stated. “This means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.”
Addressing past commitments, Torkan acknowledged the skepticism surrounding Bungie’s promises. “We understand the skepticism. We spent too much time trying to do too much, and that came at a real cost. Stability does not mean shrinking our ambition. It means focusing on the things that you want to see from us and ensuring our vision aligns with reality.”
To achieve this, Torkan mentioned that Bungie has “simplified our priorities, reduced competing initiatives, and empowered teams to make decisions closer to development. Stability comes from focus.”
Deane assured players that the studio is “putting players above everything else,” recognizing the need to create games that resonate with the community.
So far, Bungie’s comments have been positively received by players. However, after a challenging year for dedicated Destiny 2 fans and concerns about the long-term viability of Marathon, it remains to be seen how Bungie will effectively deliver on its latest promises to its player base.
