Bungie’s Marathon Returns with a $40 Price and a March 2026 Launch Date
Marathon was initially set to launch months ago, but it’s now scheduled for March 2026. Bungie shared this new timeline in a surprise video documentary released on Monday, where the developers teased a sci-fi survival extraction shooter packed with mysteries and hidden threats.
The 22-minute deep dive covers the various aspects of the game that the studio has been refining since its indefinite delay earlier this year, which followed critical fan feedback from the initial public alpha test. During this quieter phase, Bungie conducted several closed beta tests to reassess gameplay and introduced new features, including proximity chat. This feature, which became a key element in this fall’s popular rival extraction shooter, will also be a core part of Marathon.
The documentary highlights the development team’s evolving strategies regarding audio, visuals, zone design, and loot mechanics. The aim is to give Marathon’s maps and the experiences within them a distinct identity, moving away from the repetitive nature of quick-match PVP shooters. Producer Emanuel Rosu noted, “We’ve brought a little bit of grounded-ness, a little bit of grit, a little bit of darkness, a little bit of that mood, that kind of is necessary for an extraction shooter to feel dangerous.”
The video also addresses several player concerns from the original alpha test, such as enhancing solo play with a dedicated queue, improving visuals, and ensuring that defeated opponents leave behind decaying corpses instead of static loot bags. At launch, there will be four maps, including an end-game area aboard the UESC Marathon.
In addition to upgrade trees, faction ranks, and unlockable rewards, Bungie is promising some level of gun customization, allowing players to modify weapons and create iconic gear from the studio’s history, like transforming an SMG into Halo’s Needler.
Bungie also detailed the game’s monetization strategy, which includes non-expiring battle passes and a commitment to avoiding pay-to-win mechanics:
Purchasing Marathon will grant full access to the game, along with a roadmap of free gameplay updates throughout the year. This will feature new maps, new Runner shells, events, and more, starting with the exploration of UESC Marathon’s Cryo Archive in Season 1.
The goal is to ensure players log in because they enjoy the game, not out of fear of missing out—so Marathon’s Rewards Passes will not expire, and players will have the option to purchase and unlock previous Passes.
Most importantly, Bungie is dedicated to maintaining competitive integrity in Marathon, ensuring that survival is never dictated by how much money players spend.
This approach mirrors the successful strategy used in Helldivers 2, which thrived as a live service game. However, as a PVEVP title, Marathon will need to balance interactions with hostile players alongside its unique world-building. We’ll see how this unfolds in just a few months.
