Cad Bane Faces a Sudden Exit from the Game
The charm of Star Wars Unlimited lies in its flexibility; every card can find its niche if you know how to use it. Yet, some cards clearly outshine the rest, especially in competitive Premier play, where having the top-tier options can make all the difference in securing victories.
One card that has made waves in the competitive scene is Cad Bane: Still Faster Than You. This aggressive villain leader, introduced in Ashes of the Empire, has the ability to chip away at enemies and units, establishing him as a formidable early-game contender. As the game unfolds, however, he becomes increasingly difficult to counter. His dominance has reached a point where, as announced by game developer Ryan Miles, he has been suspended from Premier play.
“The data surrounding Cad Bane is unmistakable: he is a power outlier that distorts the entire metagame while consistently achieving high win rates,” Miles states.
Cad quickly established himself in Premier, making multiple appearances in events and tournaments, including the winning deck at last month’s Galactic Championship in Las Vegas. His presence was also notable in other Unlimited Sector Qualifiers following the championship. However, with his suspension, Cad’s competitive journey has come to a halt.
Miles notes that previous card suspensions in Unlimited, like War Juggernaut, occurred when new cards interacted with existing ones, amplifying their power. Cad’s rise to prominence was swift and unexpected. He slipped through the cracks during development due to what Miles describes as a “development mistake.”
“While various factors contributed to Cad Bane’s situation, the simplest explanation is that we did not recognize him as the top-performing leader within the Aggression-Vigilance-Villainy framework, believing he had exploitable weaknesses in control-focused matchups,” Miles explains. “During playtesting, we failed to refine our aggressive strategies that could outpace our more control-oriented decks, leading to a misjudgment of the eventual metagame and creating an ideal environment for Cad Bane to excel.”
This isn’t the first instance of a card being banned from Unlimited’s Premier format. Boba Fett: Collecting a Bounty was also suspended in 2024 after dominating around 40% of Top 8 finishes in sector qualifiers. Other cards, such as Jango Fett: Concealing the Conspiracy and Han Solo: Audacious Smuggler, have also faced bans. Cad’s addition to this growing list highlights his significant impact, with Miles noting that Cad was keeping countless decks out of the meta.
While Cad Bane will still be playable in other formats like Eternals and Twin Suns, it’s a tough time for players who favor him in competitive settings. However, if this suspension leads to a healthier game environment, it’s a sacrifice that could be well worth it.
