Call of Duty will no longer launch Modern Warfare and Black Ops in consecutive years.
Activision has revealed that future Call of Duty titles will no longer feature consecutive releases of Modern Warfare and Black Ops games. The last four entries in the franchise included Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III (2023), Black Ops 6 (2024), and Black Ops 7 (2025). Moving forward, the goal is to provide “an absolutely unique experience each and every year,” as stated in a recent blog post.
Black Ops 7 launched in November to mixed feedback, with reports indicating a “disappointing launch” in Europe. Prior to its release, Treyarch’s Senior Director of Production, Yale Miller, expressed concerns that Black Ops 6 and 7 might be perceived as too similar.
Activision emphasized their commitment to meaningful innovation rather than just incremental changes. While specific plans are not being disclosed at this time, they are eager to share more details when appropriate. The post also highlighted the strong future of Call of Duty, asserting that the franchise’s best days are ahead, thanks to the depth and talent within their development teams. The upcoming era of Call of Duty is expected to meet player expectations while introducing surprises that will advance both the franchise and the genre.
This year, Call of Duty is also contending with competition from EA’s Battlefield 6, which sold over 7 million copies within its first three days and is being promoted as the “best-selling shooter game of the year,” alongside Arc Raiders, which has surpassed 4 million copies sold.
