Canva Introduces Layering Feature for AI-Generated Designs

Canva has rolled out an exciting new feature that transforms flat image files and AI-generated visuals into layered, fully editable designs. The Magic Layers tool is now available in public beta across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, enabling users to select individual design elements like objects, text boxes, and graphics while keeping the original layout intact.

Cameron Adams, Canva’s chief product officer, highlighted the innovation, stating, “After a breakthrough from our AI research team, we’re introducing Magic Layers so anyone can take a flat image and turn it into a fully editable design inside Canva. There’s no need to start over or figure out the right prompt. Generation is just the beginning—real creative freedom comes from being able to edit without losing momentum.”

This feature isn’t limited to AI-generated content; Magic Layers currently supports any single-page PNG or JPEG file, with plans for expanded capabilities in the future. While the emphasis on AI images aligns with Canva’s push for generative AI tools, the goal is to eliminate the need for users to re-prompt an AI-generated image for minor adjustments.

In comparison to other creative software, Magic Layers offers a unique advantage. While generative AI tools in programs like Photoshop and Express can add generated elements to separate layers, they don’t automatically break down an entire image into layers.

Magic Layers provides creators with greater manual control over editing flat images, which could make it more challenging to differentiate between AI-generated designs and those crafted from scratch. Since current image generators produce flat designs, showcasing element layers allows artists to demonstrate their creative process beyond just describing it to a machine.
