Capcom Clears the Path for Onimusha: Way of the Sword Amidst Gaming’s Major Release Rush
Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the return of Capcom’s iconic action franchise after a two-decade break. Initially scheduled to launch amidst the chaos of Grand Theft Auto 6’s release in late September, the sequel’s debut has been moved up to dodge the traffic jam.
“Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now set to release on September 4, 2026,” Capcom announced recently. This change shifts the game’s launch from September 25 to three weeks earlier, effectively turning it into a summer blockbuster. The company also mentioned that players who pre-ordered the game on Switch 2 will receive refunds and will need to place new orders for the updated release date.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” Capcom stated. “Pre-orders for the physical edition, including those made through e-Capcom, will not be cancelled.” This led to some humorous responses, especially since Onimusha is a key card title on Switch 2. “Physical edition? What physical edition?” quipped one fan.
Onimusha is poised to continue the Japanese publisher’s recent success, particularly if it can address some difficulty balancing concerns. This latest scheduling shuffle should provide more players with the chance and motivation to dive in. The game was originally set to launch just a day after Control: Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, alongside a slew of other titles all crammed into September to give GTA 6’s November release a wide berth.
Even with this adjustment, Onimusha will still be entering a crowded field. It’s set to arrive just days after Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Star Wars Zero Company, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Who will be the first to sidestep the flood of new releases by taking the plunge into a relatively clear November? We can’t let Godzilla and Barbie have all the fun.
