Capcom Confirms Resident Evil’s Iconic Heroes Will Remain Timeless: “That’s Not How We View It”
Resident Evil Requiem plays with the notion that Leon Scott Kennedy, a fan-favorite character from Capcom’s iconic horror franchise, might be facing his final mission. He’s grappling with a mysterious infection that poses a serious threat to his life, and throughout the ninth main installment, he wrestles with the reality of his potential demise.
In the early stages of the game, this tension hints at a significant turning point for the series, as veteran survivors seem poised to pass the torch to newcomers like the inexperienced FBI agent, Grace Ashcroft. While my own experience with the game left me feeling a bit underwhelmed by the direction it ultimately takes, it appears Capcom isn’t ready to make a bold move by permanently sidelining Leon anytime soon.
In a discussion with an outlet, Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa shared insights into Capcom’s strategy for blending various horror elements into a single game, aiming to create a celebratory experience for the series’ 30th anniversary. They also touched on how the team balanced Leon’s trademark cheesy one-liners with the game’s darker moments. Nakanishi emphasized that, despite the passage of time in Requiem, there’s no intention to replace iconic characters like Leon, Chris Redfield, or Jill Valentine with younger faces. Interestingly, Jill seems to age at a much slower rate than her male counterparts, for reasons that remain unexplained.
“It’s not a strict rule that we have to age everyone up to match the timeline whenever we release a new game,” Nakanishi explained. “I think Leon is really appealing as he is right now. Who knows, we could bring him back at 70, and I’m sure he’d still be a fantastic character.”
Before the game’s release, I speculated that Leon might meet his end in Requiem, but a friend of mine argued that Resident Evil heroes seem almost immortal, having survived numerous apocalyptic scenarios with mostly emotional scars. I hoped he was mistaken, as Leon’s death could have marked a pivotal moment for the series. However, it seems Capcom may indeed view these characters as untouchable, keeping them in play for future installments. So, more of Leon’s quips are likely on the horizon for Resident Evil 10.
