Capcom Responds to Controversial Street Fighter 6 Storyline Sparking Fan Outrage
The most amusing patch note for a fighting game might just read something like, “we’ve adjusted the incest storyline in Alex’s backstory.” That seems to be the case with Street Fighter 6.
Alex, a seasoned fighter in Capcom’s franchise, was introduced to Street Fighter 6 earlier this month. While this should have been a moment of joy, fans were less than thrilled with his storyline, which involves him being romantically linked to his second cousin and step-sister, Patricia. To top it off, they’re expecting a child. The community was thrown into a frenzy, scrambling to rationalize this situation, as even if one debates the nature of their relationship, they are undeniably still cousins.
In response to the uproar, Capcom has announced plans to revise some of the in-game text that may have been “misleading.” Director Takayuki Nakayama shared on X that this won’t completely overhaul the characters’ backstories. Given how straightforward the details are, it’s unclear how they intend to address this.
We apologize for any confusion that recent topics regarding Alex’s story may have caused. While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading in the near future.…

Along with this announcement, Capcom released a short story titled “A Toast Between Fathers,” featuring Tom, who is Patricia’s father and Alex’s…first cousin once removed/adoptive father/father-in-law, reflecting on the couple’s childhood together. It’s hard to see what this adds, as it only serves as a reminder of their sibling-like upbringing. Normally, I’d question Capcom’s direction here, but I’d rather not get involved.
We’ll have to wait and see how Capcom chooses to adjust Alex’s story in a future update.
