Capcom: The Distinct Dynamics of Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft Make Resident Evil Requiem Feel Like Two Games in One
Resident Evil Requiem’s developers have shared that Leon’s gameplay segments are designed to balance the intense horror of Grace’s sections, resulting in a game that feels like a blend of two distinct experiences.
In a reveal that surprised no one, it was confirmed that Leon Kennedy will be a second playable character in Resident Evil Requiem, a detail that had been leaked earlier. What caught many off guard was how much his part of the new trailer echoed the action-heavy style of Resident Evil 6, showcasing high-octane moments filled with spin kicks, gunfire, and even a chainsaw slicing through zombies. This stands in stark contrast to the chilling atmosphere of Grace’s segments, which appears to be a deliberate choice by the developers.
In an interview, director Akifumi Nakanishi reiterated his earlier thoughts on Leon being “a bad match” for horror, stating, “Since quiet moments of hiding from monsters don’t suit him, his chapters are all about high-energy, adrenaline-fueled action. Grace’s parts, however, are where the real scares lie. We’re really highlighting the differences in their experiences this time around.”
He elaborated, “It’s almost like playing two games that mix completely different types of tension.” Despite the potential for players to struggle with the shifts between horror and over-the-top action, Nakanishi expressed confidence in the game’s unique rhythm, likening it to the shock of jumping into a cold bath after a hot sauna.
Producer Masato Kumazawa added, “After a scary segment, the action feels even more thrilling. Conversely, after an action-packed scene, the horror hits harder. This combination creates an experience that can only come from merging two entirely different gameplay styles.” Nakanishi concluded, “While Requiem is definitely scary, I believe players will also experience a level of exhilaration and satisfaction that previous Resident Evil games didn’t provide.”
Devil May Cry and Resident Evil veterans are working on a new zombie action RPG, and it’s giving off some serious Lollipop Chainsaw vibes.
