CD Projekt Teases First Look at The Witcher 3 Expansion in a Month

It looks like we’re on the verge of getting our first real glimpse of the much-anticipated expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past. This DLC will be showcased during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event in late August, hosted by Geoff Keighley.

On Tuesday, CD Projekt Red announced via X that Songs of the Past will be featured at Opening Night Live, encouraging fans to save the date for “a glimpse” of the expansion.

At first, it might seem surprising that CD Projekt Red is developing a major add-on for a game that debuted in 2015, but Songs of the Past makes sense when you consider that The Witcher 3 has sold over 65 million copies, ranking it among the top 10 best-selling games of all time. That’s a solid player base.

Following a confirmation during a 2025 earnings call that The Witcher 3 would receive “new content,” Songs of the Past was officially revealed in May as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration of the original game’s expansion, Blood and Wine.

Details about the expansion are still limited, but we know it’s being developed by the original team at CD Projekt Red in collaboration with Fool’s Theory. It’s set to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2027.

“When it comes to the scope, I’d say it’s actually a bit closer to Blood and Wine, but this is super-subjective,” stated CD Projekt co-CEO Michal Nowakowski during a financial earnings call. “It really depends on how you’re going to play — what’s your playthrough. But we’re definitely making a proper big expansion, is the message I would send out there.” For reference, Blood and Wine typically takes players between 25 and 40 hours to complete.

Regarding how this expansion connects to the upcoming The Witcher 4, which still lacks a specific release date, Nowakowski described Songs of the Past as a “reminder” of the franchise rather than a direct prologue. The add-on will once again follow Geralt of Rivia, as Ciri steps into the spotlight in the next installment. Initially planned for 2026, the expansion was pushed back to “achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint,” according to Nowakowski. Given the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, it’s wise for the studio to take its time.

We’ll get our first look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past when Gamescom’s Opening Night Live kicks off on August 25 at 2 p.m. EDT.
