It seems like Deadlock just introduced the dazzling new unicorn-horned hero Celeste, but Valve is already rolling out nerfs for this seemingly overpowered character—nerfs that fans feel still don’t go far enough.
The nerfs to Celeste were expected, as players quickly labeled the bunnyhopping hero as “overpowered” shortly after her debut in Deadlock. According to a recent post from developer ‘Yoshi’ on the official forums, Celeste will now have a base -6% bullet resistance, a damage reduction from 29 to 25, and adjustments to nearly all aspects of her kit. In short, she’s significantly less formidable.
What’s surprising, however, is the community’s reaction, with many feeling the nerfs are insufficient. A Reddit thread discussing the Deadlock update reveals that players believe other heroes have received harsher treatment. One fan noted, “Celeste is given a slap on the wrist; meanwhile, Graves has been nerfed four times with little compensation.” Another expressed disbelief that Celeste wasn’t nerfed more.
Comments like “the Celeste changes are really nothing burger” are common, with one player humorously questioning, “Celeste finally nuked off the face of the earth??” only to conclude, “Edit: nope. I’m pretty sure she is still the strongest hero in the game by a mile.” Another user echoed the earlier sentiment, simply stating, “Celeste with that slap on the wrist.”
A meme celebrating Celeste’s nerfs is circulating, but fans quickly point out that the adjustments aren’t as significant as they appear. “I feel like people are seeing how many words are on the screen and not actually reading anything,” one user remarked. Another added, “Right? This isn’t that bad of a nerf,” highlighting that Valve hasn’t addressed the core issues that make the new hero so overpowered—like her stamina.
What lies ahead for Celeste? Only time will tell, but it does seem that Valve is taking community feedback into account, even if the adjustments are coming at a slower pace than players would prefer. Here’s hoping the developers can find a balance that satisfies the majority.
Deadlock matchmaking is so off-kilter that even Valve developers are ending up in the wrong lobbies: “Can you imagine playing a game and having no one to blame except yourself?”
