Cellphone Bans During School Hours Gain Popularity

As schools nationwide tighten restrictions on cellphones, a recent survey from the Pew Research Center reveals a growing consensus in favor of these bans. A notable 77% of US adults back the idea of prohibiting cellphones in middle and high school classrooms, while 48% support a complete ban throughout the school day. This marks the first instance where more Americans favor these comprehensive bans than oppose them. Just two years ago, only 36% of adults were in favor of an all-day restriction.

Support for in-class bans is prevalent across all surveyed age groups over 18, with at least half of respondents backing all-day bans in most categories. However, among those aged 18-29, support for a full-day ban drops to a mere 28%. Republicans show slightly higher approval for both in-class and all-day bans, at 81% and 55%, respectively. Meanwhile, Democrats also express significant support, with 74% favoring in-class bans and 44% backing all-day restrictions.

Currently, over 20 states have implemented bell-to-bell cellphone bans, and initial studies present mixed results. One report indicates positive long-term effects on students’ well-being, though it found no significant change in test scores. Another study noted an increase in suspension rates during the first year of the ban, which later normalized, alongside a reduction in unexcused absences.
