CEO of Until Dawn Developer Resigns

Supermassive Games’ CEO, Robert Henrysson, has announced his departure from the company. He has been at the helm of the studio known for its horror titles like The Quarry, Until Dawn, and The Dark Pictures Anthology for over two years.

In a LinkedIn post, Henrysson shared, “Today marks the end of a very rewarding chapter of my professional life.” Alongside stepping down as CEO, he is also leaving his position as a partner at the developer’s parent company, which he joined in 2022. He expressed gratitude to his team, stating, “To everyone at Supermassive Games, I am so grateful for everything I’ve learnt and experienced with all of you. You are the greatest storytelling game studio on earth, you rock! And I wish you all the best in the future.”

Supermassive Games has made a name for itself with its cinematic horror experiences. The studio received significant acclaim for 2015’s Until Dawn, which established its unique approach to interactive storytelling, where player choices determine character fates. This formula was further refined in the Dark Pictures Anthology and 2022’s The Quarry, although the reception for the Dark Pictures games has varied.

At the start of 2024, Supermassive’s co-founders, Joe Samuels and Pete Samuels, also exited the studio. Joe had been CEO for 15 years and was Henrysson’s predecessor. That February, the studio underwent restructuring that reportedly put 90 jobs at risk. In 2025, 36 employees were laid off, and it was announced that the upcoming title, Directive 8020, would be delayed. This sci-fi horror game, inspired by classics like The Thing and Alien, finally launched in May to mixed reviews. Critics noted it as “a missed opportunity for the series to prove it’s more than just a B-movie in video game form.”

Supermassive Games has often seemed to be in pursuit of the success of Until Dawn. Since its release, the game has spawned spinoffs, a remaster, and even a film adaptation. Most recently, it was revealed that an official sequel, Until Dawn 2, is in development and set to release in 2025. This new installment is being crafted by Firesprite Games, known for the PlayStation VR title Horizon Call of the Mountain. The sequel will feature a fresh cast and storyline, centering on a group of ghost hunters exploring an abandoned tropical island where chaos is sure to ensue. The cast includes Dacre Montgomery, Neil Newbon, Gavin Leatherwood, and Tanner Buchanan.
