Chainsaw Man Creator’s Heart-Wrenching Film Set for Physical Release

GKIDS has revealed that the anime *Look Back* is set for a physical release. This 2024 film adapts the 2021 manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of *Chainsaw Man*. Pre-orders for the special collector’s edition are now available and are expected to ship this summer.

The announcement came during this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles. *Look Back* tells the intertwined stories of Fujino and Kyomoto, two aspiring artists who start as rivals but develop a deeper connection. True to Fujimoto’s style, the narrative is filled with unexpected, emotionally charged twists that complicate their lives. The film, much like the manga, beautifully explores the passion for creating art for one another. The collector’s edition is priced at $99 (currently on sale for $65.99) and includes both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray versions of the film, along with several bonuses, including a 160-page book.

The release of *Look Back* is scheduled for September 8.

*Look Back* is one of four films from the GKIDS catalog receiving new 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases. The other three titles are *Angel’s Egg*, *Linda Linda Linda*, and *Love & Pop*. While *Look Back* is the newest addition, the others are classics in their own right, albeit somewhat underrated.

*Angel’s Egg*, released in 1985, has gained a cult following thanks to the involvement of legendary *Final Fantasy* artist Yoshitaka Amano, who collaborated with *Ghost in the Shell* director Mamoru Oshii. This philosophical film uses Amano’s distinctive art style to convey its complex themes. The physical release is priced at $65.00 (currently on sale for $49.99) and includes a talk by Amano and a new booklet, shipping on September 22.

*Linda Linda Linda* epitomizes the “teenage girls finding themselves” genre. This 2005 film follows high school students Kei, Kyoko, Nozomi, and Song as they prepare for a school concert. It captures the highs and lows of high school life with a tender lens, making every moment feel monumental. The title song is also a catchy highlight. The collector’s edition is priced at $65.00 (currently on sale for $49.99) and features a behind-the-scenes featurette, set to ship on August 25.

Lastly, *Love & Pop*, a cult classic from 1998, follows a group of high school girls who date older men for money. The protagonist, Hiromi, is on a quest to earn enough cash for a piece of jewelry before the mall closes. The film’s handheld digicam style gives it a distinctly ’90s vibe.

Notably, *Love & Pop* marks the live-action directorial debut of Hideaki Anno, the creator of *Neon Genesis Evangelion*, and serves as his immediate follow-up to the iconic anime series. The collector’s edition is priced at $29.99 (not on sale) and includes a bonus feature titled “Hideaki Anno: Evangelion and Love & Pop,” with a shipping date of October 6.

A mysterious new *Evangelion* project is also on the horizon, 30 years in the making…
