Charlie Cox Confirms His Role in Upcoming Sega Game
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 marks Charlie Cox’s debut in video game voice acting, and he’s already wrapped up recording for his next project. At New York Comic Con, Cox revealed that he will lend his voice to an upcoming untitled game from Sega.
Originally from London, Cox’s portrayal of the New York vigilante Matt Murdock was so convincing that the Sega team was taken aback when he arrived for his recording session.
“I walked in and said, ‘Hi guys, nice to meet you! How are you?’ and they all reacted with, ‘Oh, he’s English,'” Cox shared. “They had envisioned the character as American. Now I have to record 40 hours of lines in an accent I wasn’t prepared for. I think they assumed I was American.”
This mix-up is understandable, especially if the Sega team hasn’t experienced Expedition 33 yet. (They might want to check it out before the RPG leaves Xbox Game Pass.) Cox mentioned that his recording for Expedition 33 took about four hours, although writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yenlater suggested it was closer to eight. Given the 40 hours he spent in the booth for the Sega project, it seems he has a more significant role this time around.
Cox expressed that the accolades for his performance in Expedition 33 made him feel like a “total fraud” due to how quickly he recorded his lines for Gustave. “But I’m so thrilled for the company, and I’m really happy it did well,” he noted at a convention last year. He received a nomination for Best Performance at The Game Awards but credited motion-capture actor Maxence Cazorla for the character’s success. “Any nomination or recognition I receive, I have to attribute to him because the character’s performance is really his work, and my voice was just a part of that process,” he explained.
Cox attended NYCC to promote the third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is set to premiere next spring and will bring Daredevil back together with the rest of the Defenders.
The voice actor behind Gustave has also tried out the early segments of the acclaimed RPG, he mentioned.
